The Peterbilt 351 model was a worthy successor to the 350 model, offering shorter wheelbases and optimized weight distribution. The sales figures tell a compelling story, with over 7000 units of the 351 sold from 1954 to 1976 compared to just 847 of the 350 from 1949 to 1957. It is safe to say that the 351 was the model that truly propelled Peterbilt's success. This mod aims to recapture some of the magic of this pivotal truck model, including one of its iconic movie appearances!
Pay careful attention when configuring the chassis, engine, and transmission. The standard chassis uses double reduction rear axles (Rockwell SLDD) and only slow ratios are available (4.68 to 5.90). This is best suited for the more 'vintage' engine selections, trading speed for more torque at the wheels. There are also chassis options with Hendrickson RS or Stabilaire suspension and SQHD rears (ratios 3.70 to 4.63) which pair well with more recent engines.
